Expanded Cinema is an online platform for experimental film, early video, and sound-based, durational work. All of the material is being curated from available media online, emphasizing an overlooked facet of the archival function of new media. Dispatx is concerned with the creative method in artistic and curatorial practice. The investigations we undertake examine processes of making and showing material in a number of ways, bringing together a collective of collaborating practitioners as part of a curatorial platform. Beyond differences of media and means, projects have developed mixtures of the creative and the critical, involved structural and organic development, logical problem solving and exegesis.
We have also seen practices that resist
standardised categories of cause and effect, process and product, engaging with the intuitive and the irrational. Dispatx looks to the areas of contamination between these diverse approaches. Our focus is directed toward such complex strategies as those that can give insight into the commonalities and differences that make up methods of search.
Five years after starting Dispatx were opening our own creative method up for review. An examination of the process by which we develop a theme - the initial editorial text that serves as an impetus for projects and submissions - will further open Dispatx to public view and external input. Through discussions and interactions with our users and collaborators we will explore a number of questions concerning the way Dispatx operates. What are the key issues we need to address in setting a theme? Who or what are the resources we turn to, and what do they have to say? How can we develop a theme that is both open and closed enough to generate ideas in a wide audience and foster compelling material in a variety of media? How does the website help to expose these processes? What is at stake in this process, and how might it be productive?
Our aim is collaboratively and publicly to develop a theme that will form the basis for a new collection of online projects - developed in Make - and open submissions from 2009. We expect the theme to be set and the site open to submissions from March 1. Both Make and our internal Dx-News RSS feeds will be open immediately in order to show how the process is unfolding. We hope that you will contribute to the debate and further our investigations into the creative method.
Desde hace más de cuatro años, Dispatx Art Collective ha desarrollado una investigación rigurosa de la práctica curatorial y creativa. A través de ocho colecciones, con más de 100 proyectos realizados en diversos medios y formatos y desarrollados online, más de una docena colaboraciones concluidas y la participacion de unos 70 artistas de 50 diferentes paises, hemos explorado y cuestionado las ricas intersección entre la práctica curatorial y la práctica creativa. Nos hemos enfocado en fomentar una actividad dialógica, buscando el debate crítico en la práctica y teoría, a través de reseñas curatoriales y la apertura del proceso de trabajo de los artistas, a los comentarios de los usuarios. En la actualidad, Dispatx es una gran fuente de proyectos artísticos que han emergido de esta interconexión y que entre sí, trazan una serie de nodos de discusión creativa a partir de los cuales podemos establecer criterios y discursos críticos para el arte contemporáneo. En un momento en que la palabra crisis ronda con insistencia los contextos de arte, así como otros ámbitos de la sociedad, creemos que nuestra labor debe dar un giro hacia una práctica que provea medios y herramientas de reflexión y discusión crítica. Durante los próximos meses desde la publicación de la colección Apropiación en la Práctica Creativa, estaremos reestructurando la web, buscando un nuevo enfoque teórico y discursivo, para llevar a cabo estrategias de debate que tengan un mayor impacto en los contextos del arte. También queremos poder compartir más información con nuestros usuarios y llevar a cabo una práctica más colaborativa con otros colectivos que tienen un interés similar.
